RFID Traceability and Anti-Counterfeiting for Luxury Leather Goods: from Tannery to NFC Certificate

The Client

An international luxury leather goods group, with a major production hub in Tuscany, processes over 200,000 exotic hides every year — crocodile, python, ostrich — worth on average around €1,500 per single crocodile hide. 95% of production takes place entirely in Italy, in a district where artisanal excellence coexisted, until recently, with largely analogue traceability: paper documents in the tannery, QR codes applied manually on receipt, paper delivery notes accompanying every processing stage.

The Challenge

Every precious hide entering production carries a double value: economic and regulatory. Exotic hides protected under the CITES convention require an RFID tag that supports rigorous documentary compliance, and any error or lost certificate represents a concrete legal risk. On top of this comes the risk of counterfeiting: without an end-to-end traceability system, distinguishing an authentic handbag or leather accessory from an imitation becomes increasingly difficult for the end customer. At the same time, manually counting an incoming batch took between 4 and 6 hours of work, with repeated physical handling of extremely delicate and costly materials.

The Wintag Solution

Wintag designed a two-tier traceability system, built on two complementary tag philosophies, both developed in-house drawing on over 30 years of experience in technical plastics processing:

  • A reusable RFID tag, rigid-bodied with a direct physical attachment to the hide, designed for the closed loop inside the tannery: it withstands repeated cycles of acids, heat and mechanical pressure typical of processing, and is engineered for over 30 reuse cycles before replacement.
  • A flexible single-use tag, which adapts to the hide's surface even on irregular textures, with dual RFID and QR code reading, designed to accompany the hide along the entire open supply chain, right up to delivery to the final assembly department — with no need for retrieval or return logistics.
  • An NFC tag applied to the finished product, which brings together the data collected in previous stages into a single digital story that the end customer can access with a simple smartphone tap: certificate of material origin, reference to CITES documentation, confirmation of the piece's authenticity.

The entire architecture integrates via standard APIs with the client's existing management software, with no need for structural changes to existing information systems.

The Results

Automating the incoming reading process brought the inventory time for an entire batch to under 2 minutes, compared to 4-6 hours with the manual process, with an estimated 99% reduction in counting errors compared to QR-code-based inventory. Physical handling of precious hides during counting fell by around 80%. On the compliance side, CITES documentation is now digital, permanent and retrievable in seconds in the event of a regulatory inspection — eliminating the risk of lost or incomplete paper documents.

For the end customer, the impact goes beyond internal operations: the NFC authenticity certificate applied to handbags, belts and precious leather accessories turns a regulatory obligation into a brand experience moment and a concrete anti-counterfeiting defence, in which the piece tells its own production story with a natural gesture.

Why Wintag

A simple reseller of standard RFID tags falls short against the real cycles of a tannery: acids, heat and repeated mechanical pressure put to the test any encapsulation not specifically designed for that context. Decades of experience in technical plastics processing, inherited from the group's previous industrial activity, allows Wintag to design not just a component, but an end-to-end solution: from the tag, to the reading gates, to the integration middleware, right through to on-site operator training.
