RFID on the Frame: Secondary Market Traceability for High-End Bicycles

The Client

A high-end bicycle manufacturer faced a problem typical of premium durable goods: once sold, the bicycle drops out of the manufacturer's visibility. The secondary market — private resale, common for products of this value — remained entirely opaque, while at the same time the risk grew of non-original parts sold as compatible or even as official components.

The Challenge

For a manufacturer, not knowing where their products end up after the first sale means losing an enormous amount of valuable information: geographic data, resale channels, secondary market behaviour. For the end customer, the problem is the opposite but equally acute: at the moment of resale, there is no simple, reliable way to prove ownership and authenticity of the bike, nor to guarantee to the buyer that the parts fitted are original.

The Wintag Solution

Wintag applied an RFID tag directly to the bicycle frame, in a position and with an encapsulation designed to withstand impacts, vibrations and weathering for the product's entire useful life. The system serves two distinct needs with the same physical component:

• For the manufacturer: through the dedicated app, every tag read generates data on where and when the bicycle is identified, building over time a map of the market — both primary and secondary — that would otherwise be entirely invisible.
• For the end customer: the tag generates a digital certificate of ownership, useful and verifiable at the moment of a private resale, and allows verification of the authenticity of any official parts fitted to the bike.

The Results

The manufacturer gained, for the first time, visibility into a market segment — private resale — that represents a significant share of the overall value of the high-end bicycle sector, but had traditionally remained outside any tracking system. For the end customer, the digital ownership certificate increases trust and perceived value in the transaction, reducing the risk of disputes over the authenticity of the bike or its fitted components.
