Bin tracking and waste collection route verification are among the fastest-growing RFID use cases in the municipal sector. But choosing the wrong tag means ending up with transponders that peel off after six months, stop responding after the first winter, or fail to be read by the truck's portal antenna at full speed.

Why Waste Management Is a Hostile Environment for RFID
Street bins live outdoors 365 days a year. They endure mechanical impacts during emptying, exposure to rain, snow, UV radiation, aggressive cleaning agents, and temperatures ranging from −20 °C to +60 °C. The bin's plastic body — typically HDPE or polypropylene — is a material that absorbs radio frequencies unpredictably depending on wall thickness and contamination level.
The RFID tag must survive all of this while continuing to be read reliably even when the bin is tipped, dirty or partially deformed.
UHF or HF: Which Frequency Should You Choose?
For waste bins the answer is almost always UHF (860–960 MHz). The main reason is read range: a correctly installed UHF system on the truck's portal reads the tag even at 1–2 metres of distance, without requiring precise vehicle positioning. With HF (13.56 MHz) the maximum range is around 10–15 cm — far too short for a moving operation.
The only exception is when you intentionally want to limit the read range (for example, to prevent unwanted reads in areas densely packed with bins). In that case HF may make sense, but it is a minority use case.
IP Rating: The Minimum Acceptable Is IP67
A tag for outdoor use must be waterproof. The IP67 rating guarantees resistance to temporary submersion up to 1 metre — sufficient for most weather conditions. For bins located in flood-prone areas or washed with high-pressure water jets, we recommend IP68 or IP69K.
Caution: many "outdoor" tags available off the shelf claim IP65 (protection against water jets) but do not pass submersion tests. Always verify that the IP certification is supported by test documentation, not just a supplier declaration.
Body Material: ABS, Nylon or Epoxy Resin?
The tag body must resist both mechanical impact (bins are literally thrown during collection) and chemical attack from leachate liquids. The main options are:
- Standard ABS — cost-effective, adequate for normal urban environments, but becomes brittle with prolonged UV exposure unless UV stabilisers are included
- UV-stabilised ABS — estimated outdoor service life of 5–7 years
- PA66 nylon — better chemical resistance, ideal for bins in contact with acidic leachates
- Epoxy resin — maximum protection, typically used for on-metal applications (e.g. glass collection bells)
Fixing Method: Don't Underestimate It
The best-performing tag is useless if it detaches after three months. The fixing options depend on the bin material:
- Mechanical riveting — the most robust solution for hard plastic bins; requires drilling but guarantees long-term hold even after years of impacts
- Two-component structural adhesive — suitable for smooth flat surfaces; avoid on curved or porous surfaces
- Co-moulding insert — the tag is integrated into the bin during manufacture; optimal for new production runs but not applicable to existing containers
The HDPE Adhesion Challenge
High-density polyethylene (HDPE) — the most common material for wheeled bins — is one of the lowest-surface-energy plastics available. Standard adhesives simply do not bond reliably to it over time. If you are applying tags to existing HDPE bins, either mechanical fastening or a purpose-formulated adhesive primer are mandatory. Tags with generic double-sided tape will fail in outdoor conditions within months.
PAYT and TARIP Billing: What the System Requires
Many municipalities are moving towards pay-as-you-throw (PAYT) or tariff-by-actual-production (TARIP) waste billing models. In these scenarios, every collection event must be recorded with bin ID, timestamp and collection route — which raises requirements for the tag and reader combination:
- The tag must carry a globally unique ID (EPC Gen2 compliant for UHF)
- Read distance must be sufficient to capture the tag during a normal emptying cycle, regardless of bin orientation
- The system must handle multiple reads of the same tag in a single pass without duplicate counting
- Data integrity must be maintained even with partial read failures (e.g. tag obscured by mud or ice)
Sizing the Project: Key Questions Before Choosing
Before selecting a tag, it helps to answer these questions:
- How many bins need to be tagged? (impacts minimum order quantities and unit cost)
- Is reading performed with the truck moving, or with the bin stationary?
- Is write capability required on the tag (e.g. to update container status)?
- Is the reader system already defined (fixed portal antenna, handheld, smartphone)?
- Are the bins made of plastic, metal, or composite material? (affects antenna and chip design)
